Plant of the Month - New Seasons Roses

The Portstone team have been busy pruning and potting up the new season’s roses. We are proud to stock high health Matthews Roses.

Bob Matthews is one of NZ leading rose breeder.

When choosing your rose some consideration needs to be given to the rose type;

Hybrid Teas, traditionally a single rose on a long stem, great for picking, many Hybrid Teas are fragrant.

Floribunda, multiple flowers on one stem, very showy. They make a great choice for your garden border mixing in beautifully with perennials. Crossed with Hybrid Tea roses, great improvements have been made in the flower formation, while they still retain their vigour and freedom of blooming.

David Austin and Old-fashioned roses English roses were named by rose breeder David Austin. Great range of colours with character of an old rose, repeat flowering with fragrance. Old Fashioned are easy to grow, mainly in an informal manner so great for mixed beds or borders. Ideal for
hedging and background plants or up walls and fences.

We also have a selection of traditional 800mm Standard Roses and the very popular 450mm patio standard which is an ideal size for pots or the garden.

All our roses are displayed with descriptive picture labels. Our favourite roses is Allison Scott, (pictured left) newly released last year this bush floribunda has blooms of glowing warm coral orange.

This year we are stocking five new varieties, Aroha, Better Times, Frosty Moon, In Friendship, My Daughter, and The Sarjeant Rose.

You can check out our roses on our website www.portstone.co.nz.

We would love to see you in store, grab a coffee at Leeves café and wander our rose selection.
