The Canterbury Horticultural Society has introduced two new categories of awards to acknowledge “outstanding services to horticulture and gardening in Christchurch and Canterbury”.

They are the John Taylor Award for Leadership in Horticulture and the Outstanding Horticulturist Awards.

The John Taylor Award recognises a person who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to horticulture in Christchurch and Canterbury and it is not limited to CHS members.

At its recent AGM, CHS President Elizabeth Peacock presented Neiel Drain with this award.  “Neiel is now the CHS Patron, a past President, historian and long-time Board member of the CHS. He was the Head of Parks and Reserves for the Christchurch City Council and has received many prestigious awards for horticulture in New Zealand.  I think he is a most appropriate first recipient of this award”, said Mrs Peacock

John Taylor was a member of the CHS, its President and member of the CHS Board for many years. He was the first NZ student to study at Kew Gardens in London, worked at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and became a well-known nurseryman and successful businessman. He later became a Senior Lecturer at Lincoln University starting the Diploma in Parks and Recreation Administration. He was recognised by the Queen with an OBE.

The purpose of the Outstanding Horticulturist Award is to recognise people who have displayed

  • Great horticultural knowledge
  • Commitment to the distribution of knowledge
  • Demonstrated horticultural practice to a wider audience

Mrs Peacock presented Outstanding Horticulturalist Awards to CHS members Michael Coulter, Phil Ducker and Freda Hunter. Two non-CHS members also received the award. They were Jeremy Hawker, Team Leader of the City Council’s Botanic Gardens, and Eiji Kawada, landscaper and horticulturalist at Oderings.
