Amberley Garden Club

Amberley Garden Club was established 1958. The first meeting was held at the school on 17th February. It is said that this first meeting was called by the co-ordinating committee of the Women’s Division and Women’s Institute.
Back then the membership grew fast and within the first year had over seventy members, it would be wonderful to see those numbers again in the present day. Right from the beginning a competition table, plant exchange and sales table was set up. We continue to have a competition table, sales table and have added raffles in more recent years.

In 1962 the garden club took over the flower tent at the A&P Show which we still run every year with the help of our amazing volunteers from the club and it proves to be an extremely popular event in the North Canterbury calendar. Looking back it is evident that the garden club has long been involved with many community events such as the Residents Association, community balls, making wreaths for ANZAC day and providing the flowers for the Senior Citizens Christmas party much of which we still do and it is wonderful that these traditions have remained even as times have changed.

We have guest speakers that are chosen to enhance the gardening knowledge of our members and we also venture out on garden trips in the Canterbury region throughout the year. Some of our members have been with us for decades and are also very happy to share their own wealth of knowledge with the group. Mrs Freda Hunter is one of our most notable members who has also had a connection with the CHS. Recently we have really enjoyed drawing on the knowledge of local people and businesses that we have surrounding us.
